Brian completes score to DON’T FADE AWAY

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on February 7th, 2009

DON'T FADE AWAY posterBrian just completed scoring the dramatic feature film DON’T FADE AWAY directed by Luke Kasdan. The film stars Mischa Barton, Ryan Kwanten, Ja Rule and Beau Bridges. The film currently is being represented by New Films International.

New Films International

DON’T FADE AWAY Synopsis:

Life was easy for Jackson White. With looks, brains, and athletic ability, the world’s possibilities seemed limitless. But, when he came to New York City to pursue a career in the music industry, he was so seduced by money and status that he lost track of who he was. Now, with both his personal and professional lives on the edge of ruin, he’s been called home to care for his dying father. While in North Carolina, he’ll have to confront the friends he lost track of and the girl he never met.

Brian was brought in very late in the post process to score the film. In fact, Brian had only 5 days to write and record the score for the film. The film’s sound mix was completed this past week at the Wow & Flutter dub stage in Santa Monica, CA. Look for the film to hit the festival circuit later this year and probably see a commercial release in 2010.

Brian’s music returns to the stage with…THE MONK

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on October 6th, 2008

The Monk (Exit Theatre, San Francisco, 2008) From one of the most influential horror novels of all time … Lust. Power. Deception. And lots of labyrinthine plot twists.

Brian’s music returns to the stage this month for the stage play THE MONK at the Exit Theatre in San Francisco presented by NO NUDE MEN PRODUCTIONS. Brian last worked in theatre in 2003 on the staged musical SnEauX! – The SINsational Gothic Figure Skating Musical at the Matrix Theatre in Los Angeles where Brian served as the orchestrator and arranger for that musical.

For THE MONK, Brian was approached by longtime friend and collaborator Lisa Fowle (www.dragonflysound.com) about working with her on the music for the show. Lisa was already on board for the show’s sound design and music. Brian’s music is dark, classical and gothic inspired with a little inspiration from Enya and other celtic like qualities. (See the music page for show excerpts).

The play revolves around a Spanish monk, Ambrosio (Ryan Hayes), whose life is crossed by a pair of young women: the tragic nun Agnes (Lisa Swanson) and the impoverished aristocrat Antonia (Margery Fairchild), both of whom will be key in the arrogant cleric’s fall from grace. As Ambrosio is guided down a path of dissolution by a mysterious beauty named Matilda (Cassie Powell), the story weaves in and out of the quest for Antonia’s hand by the handsome cavalier Lorenzo (James Tinsley) and the desperate search by Don Raymond (Cordell Wesselink) for the missing mother of his child. Along the way, ghosts and demons intervene, bandits attempt murder on hapless travelers, and nothing short of the Spanish Inquisition turns up for the finale.

THE MONK will play at the Exit Theatre in downtown San Francisco Thursday Oct. 9th (preview) then Friday and Saturday nights thru NOV 22. Tickets: $10 first weekend, $15 – $20 subsequent performances. For reservations email ambrosioandmatilda@gmail.com or call 415-994-1367.

9/Tenths released in Belgium/Denmark/Netherlands

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on September 3rd, 2008

9/Tenths Denmark/Belgium DVD

9/Tenths was released on August 28, 2008 on DVD in the Benelux territories including The Netherlands and Belgium. The title has been changed for those regions to “The Survivors“. Most likely due to the fact that the phrase “possession is nine tenths of the law”…where the film’s original USA title comes from…does not have the same meaning in other languages as it does in U.S. english.

Of Brian’s score, Dutch Filmworks says “The sizzling soundtrack by Brian Ralston makes ‘The Survivors’ an unusually nerve-racking film experience.”

GRADUATION Gets Great Review In Houston

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on April 25th, 2007

GRADUATION

Houston Chronicle movie critic Joey Guerra gave GRADUATION a great review this past Tuesday, April 24th, 2007. The review is titled “Crime caper makes a grand Graduation – Likable cast, filmmaker’s light touch make film worth seeing.”

Guerra says the following, “Graduation takes one of the most pivotal days in teenage life, ‘high school commencement’ and adds to the madness with a cleverly planned bank robbery. Far-fetched, sure, but filmmaker Michael Mayer pulls it off with a light, likable touch and a photogenic, young cast…what Mayer does from that jumpoff point makes the film work. Instead of making just another teen throwaway flick, he’s infused Graduation with nicely realized characters and action that rarely lags. The crime caper that makes up the final third of the film sparkles with energy.

Upcoming Projects

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on October 30th, 2005

Brian has a couple upcoming projects to announce. Continuing his collaboration with writer/director Tim Garrick, two more short films are about to be shot. The first, currently in pre-production, is another comedy short, again starring Kristen Bell called THE MOTEL SISTERS. The script is incredibly funny and has a lot of “white trash humor” which Tim, Brian and Kristen Bell are use to from their work on the musical SnEauX!

The second short, also in pre-production right now, is called OPEN HOUSE and is a horror film based off of the first 15 minute opening of a feature horror script that Tim Garrick wrote. The story is set in the 1950s and is described as being “pretty messed up.”

Both films should finish shooting by the end of the year and the composing of the music will begin after the film editing is completed, most likely in the January-February time period.

Brian even composed new music specifically for the trailer to further help with the…”homage.”

BORNE Album Finished – Release in September!

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on August 26th, 2005

BORNEBORNE’s new self titled album is finished, mastered and at the CD duplication house being prep’d for release in early September. The album was recorded at Avatar Studio “A” in New York city and James Lugo’s Vocal Asylum in Hollywood, CA. The wonderful Andy Ellis mixed the album. The album was mastered by Louie Teran of Marcussen Mastering. Louie has mastered many notable rock/pop CDs including the Dave Mathews Band (The Gorge) and soundtrack releases including the soundtracks for Shrek 2 (score), Cold Mountain (score), Mean Girls, Spiderman 2, and the oscar award winning score for Finding Neverland. Needless to say, the post production of the album was in very good hands. Some tracks from the album have been posted on the music page of brianralston.com under the Pop & Rock section. Feel free to check them out. Brian did all of the horn arrangements for 4 songs on the album (Chelsea, Forgive Me, Useless and Body Talk) and the string orchestrations and arrangements for the song Crazy World. He also performed all of the trumpet and flugelhorn parts on the album. Since Brian spends most of his time composing and not performing, this is a unique opportunity to hear him play his trumpet as well. The quickest way to purchase the album at first will be either through the band’s website at www.borne-music.com, or it will be on iTunes and at CDBaby soon, probably later in September. If you are in the Southern California area, you can also purchase the album at one of BORNE’s up-coming shows as well. Enjoy!

Brian Collaborates With Rock Band BORNE.

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on July 8th, 2005

BORNEBrian is currently working with the Los Angeles based rock band BORNE. For their new, as of yet untitled album, Brian is arranging orchestral string parts and may even play a little trumpet here and there. Crashing onto the nightclub scene in 2004 and capturing a hip, young audience in Southern California, BORNE is quickly becoming a hit band throughout the west coast. Their pop rock sensibilities are an homage to the popular groups of the last few decades from STING and THE POLICE to JASON MRAZ and DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. BORNE’s website and tour dates can be found at www.borne-music.com. Brian is excited to work with BORNE and be a part of their new album. 9/Tenths score excerpts posted

Posted in Brian Ralston News & Updates on May 1st, 2005

9 TenthsExcerpts from the musical score to the feature film 9/Tenths have been posted on the music page of brianralston.com. Feel free to check them out. Featured solo musicians on this rich orchestral score were Chris Burton Jácome on Flamenco Guitar, Karen Hogle – solo soprano, Harry Shirinian – solo viola, and M.B. Gordy – hand percussion. Brian composed almost 50 minutes of music for 9/Tenths.

“Sometime in the not too distant future. Terrorist attacks continue to escalate. Cities are the primary targets.

William and his wife Jessica, flee the city seeking safety. Upon reaching their newly purchased ranch, in the middle of nowhere, they discover, Elias a Mexican ranch hand already living there. Just as the property dispute escalates to a dangerous level, a massive terrorist attack causes widespread, catastrophic destruction – the world, as they know it, no longer exists.

The film takes a brutal, unflinching look at mankind stripped bare of the thin veneer of social convention. It is a daring, bold, often painful journey into the darkness of our primal, carnal selves. ”

9/Tenths is directed by Bob Degus (Pleasantville) and stars Gabrielle Anwar (Scent Of A Woman, The Three Muskateers), Henry Ian Cusick (Half Light) and Dave Ortiz (The Crow-Wicked Prayer). Coming soon!
